Uniting Aged Care Victoria & Tasmania is a leader in the provision of aged care services

History of Strathdon

Strathdon Community began in 1968 through the generous donation of 2.7 acres of land from Mrs. Mary Matheson.

Her original intention was for a child care facility, but due to urgent need for the care of older people in the community, it was agreed that the site would be used for an aged care facility with provision for a church and Sunday school.

The name originated from “The Strathdon” sailing barque, on which Mrs. Matheson’s husband had commenced his training in seamanship. Mary Matheson is acknowledged for her vision and generosity which enabled Strathdon to become a reality.

In November 1967 the first residents began to arrive. They were welcomed into their new home by representatives from participating churches in the Maroondah Presbytery, who formed ‘The Foothills Auxiliary’; a name chosen as the churches involved were all situated at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges.

Initially the facility consisted of a 30 bed Hostel, which was expanded to 58 beds in 1970.  In 1978 a Nursing Home was added to the site and the following year a Day Therapy Centre was opened, offering its services to residents and non-residents alike.

Since these early days Strathdon has continued to grow, adding the following services:
 - Independent Living Units in Forest Hill and Mount Waverley
 - Jack Faichney Memorial Hostel (dementia specific);
 - 'Mingara', Day Activity Centre;
 - Community Aged Care Packages.
