Strathdon Mingara Day Activity Centre - Program Information 
 

 Programs and Groups

Men's Group - Frail Aged Group

This is a centre based activity program that provides opportunities for social engagement, stimulating activities and improved fitness and general wellbeing through the ‘Well For Life’ program.

Activities include:

  • Indoor games i.e. bowls, darts, bocce
  • Quizzes/word games
  • Woodwork
  • Newspaper discussion including current affairs /sport
  • Films/videos
  • Table games i.e  scrabble, bingo
  • Gentle exercise
  • Outings
  • Guest speakers
  • Health promotion
  • Cultural celebration

The program is available to frail aged men who live within the City of Whitehorse and are able to participate in program activities independently.

Morning tea and a light lunch is provided.

Cost: A daily fee of $12.00 is charged to eligible clients to assist in the day to day running costs. (No client is excluded from the program due to their inability to pay.)

Where possible clients are asked to arrange their own transport. Taxis will be arranged by agreement, where there is no other form of transport available.

Dementia Specific Group This is a centre based activity program that provides day respite and a planned activities program for people who suffer from memory loss and confusion.  It also provides support for those who care for them.

Daily Activity Program (Example Only):

  • 9.30am           Arrival
  • 10:30am         Orientation and Socialisation
  • 11.00am         Morning Tea and Discussion
  • 11:30am         Exercises to Music
  • 11:45am         Activities may include some of the following :-          
    • Table Games
    • Physical Games
    • Cooking
    • Painting
    • Outdoor Walks
    • Gardening etc.     
  • 12:30pm         Quiz or Word Game
  • 1.00pm           Lunch
  • 1.45pm           News of the Day and Discussion
  • 2.00pm           Physical Activity
  • 2.15pm           Sing-along or other Musical Activity
  • 3.00pm           Departure 

There are two group outings coordinated each year for the group.

Eligibility:

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type or associated disorder causing memory loss and/or confusion.
  • Must live in the City of Whitehorse (or further beyond if no other appropriate service is available).
  • No age restrictions, high and low functioning accepted.
  • All religious, cultural, socio-economic backgrounds.
  • No behaviours which create unsafe conditions for clients/staff (ie severely challenging).
  • Must have current ACAS assessment or GP referral.
