Uniting Aged Care Victoria & Tasmania is a leader in the provision of aged care services

The Kalkee Story

Established in 1971, the original area of 1.68 acres at 87 Francis Street, Belmont was the site for the home of the Harper family, members of the local congregation who had retired from Kalkee in the Wimmera.

Kalkee commenced serving older people of the Geelong Community in 1972, with the establishment of its first group of independent and supported cottages and community homes within the Belmont community. Kalkee has now grown to accommodate the needs of older people in the geographical area of approximately half of the Barwon and South Western Region of Victoria.

Kalkee is recognised as one of the leading agencies within the region and has a demonstrated commitment to provide flexible and quality care to the frail elderly. Kalkee Community provides a comprehensive range of services for older people, (including specialist support for those with moderate to high levels of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias) as health needs change from simple housing needs through to twenty-four hour, seven days a week personal care.

Kalkee was developed through the extraordinary efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers, under the leadership of Colin Murray and support from the Belmont Presbyterian and Methodist Church along with other local congregations.

As with so many community initiatives, Kalkee benefited from the vision and generosity of a local benefactor, the late Miss Elsie Halliday McGeachy, through a bequest of $55,000.
